Keynote Speaker Mr. Patrick Henry Hughes:
(Excerpt from WHAS Crusade for
Children)
University of Louisville band member Patrick Henry
Hughes, who has captured national headlines for his
inspiring story of determination and remarkable
achievement despite being physically challenged, will be
joined with his father as our Featured Speaker.
Despite being born with a rare genetic disorder that
left him with no eyes and the inability to fully
straighten his arms or legs, Hughes is excelling in
college. With his dad guiding his way, Hughes is a
trumpet player in the University of Louisville marching
band, a concert pianist who has performed at the Kennedy
Center in Washington, D.C., a recording artist and, most
important, a straight-A student.
Born on March 10, 1988 in Louisville, Ky., Hughes'
passion for music began at an early age. His parents,
musicians in their own right, used music to calm him as
a baby. Hughes always wanted to "play with Dad" and soon
followed in his musical footsteps, playing notes on the
piano at nine months and full songs by age 2, all by
listening to the tune.
None of this would be possible, however, without the
help and encouragement from his family - mom, Patricia,
dad, Patrick John, and his two younger brothers, Jesse
and Cameron. Hughes' dad plays an especially vital role
as Patrick's "eyes" at school and his "legs" on the
field. The elder Hughes works nights so that he can
spend his days helping his son with his school work and
attending band practice.
"I am blessed to be a part of the path that my son
Patrick Henry Hughes is traveling," said the elder
Hughes. "Patrick's commitment to his studies, music and
faith, as well as his positive attitude toward all he
comes in contact with are characteristics that any
father would be proud to see in his son, as I am to see
them in Patrick."
