products and good maintenance practices. It will be
presented for an outstanding effort in maintaining a clean
and healthy indoor work environment, while reducing overall
operating costs.
NAFA hopes that by publicizing and recognizing the benefits
and achievements of good filtration practices, it can foster
and encourage similar practices in a larger number of
facilities.
Eligibility Any facility or company that has
demonstrated a concerted effort to provide a clean indoor
environment by using proper air filtration products is
eligible to be nominated.
A
nomination application must be submitted prior to August
1st of the nominating year. The application may be
accompanied by information and documentation that explains
the efforts at the facility. Key categories which will be

scholarships that honor students who demonstrate outstanding
personal and academic characteristics.
The scholarship competition is open only to the immediate
family of NAFA Active, Associate, Supplemental and Affiliate

All applicants must submit their academic information, a 1-2
page typewritten essay addressing work experience, career
objective, leisure interests and activities, as well as two
letters of recommendation. All applications are evaluated
anonymously by the NAFA Past Presidents, and winners of the

NAFA Awards Nomination Form |
|
In 2007, NAFA initiated the
NAFA Hall of Fame-
recognition for individuals who have left or retired
from the air filter industry but did much to promote
NAFA and air filtration during their career. We honor
no more than two individuals each year at the NAFA
Annual Convention.
The NAFA Board of Directors has approved two new award
categories for 2008:
Distinguished Service Award
The DSA is instituted to recognize individuals who, by
their efforts, promote NAFA through their participation
on Committees, contributing articles to Air Media or
writing or rewriting NAFA texts, giving presentations to
or on behalf of NAFA, or generally doing work that
promotes the air filter industry while being a member of
NAFA.
Individuals eligible for the DSA must be a member in
good standing and need not be retired or deceased to
receive this honor.
Lifetime Achievement Award
The LAA is instituted to recognize those individuals
either in or outside the NAFA membership who have
contributed to the overall knowledge of the art and
science of air filtration. These people would be
involved in providing insight and research into the
principles of air filtration, testing and validating
performance, and promoting proper filtration to or
through the industry.
To be considered for any of the above awards, NAFA
members need only send in the name of the person along
with a letter describing why they feel the individual is
worthy of either the DSA or the LAA (Hall of Fame need
only send in the name).

NAFA CAFS Certification Program
Policies & Procedures
NAFA CAFS Certification Testing Application
|
|
In response to the need for quality assurance, increased
education and recognition of professional achievement within
the industry, NAFA developed the NAFA Certified Air Filter
Specialist (CAFS) program—the first education and
certification program designed specifically for air
filtration professionals.
The CAFS program distinguishes those professionals who have
demonstrated a thorough, up-to-date understanding of air
filtration technology and high level of professionalism.
In order to become certified, air filtration professionals
must pass an extensive examination on the principles,
methods and applications of air filtration. Candidates for
certification are also subject to compliance with the NAFA
Code of Ethics.
Certification is renewable on an annual basis pending
successful completion of continued education requirements in
order to demonstrate current and continued expertise.
When purchasing products or services from a Certified Air
Filter Specialist customers are assured that their
particular requirements and needs will be addressed by a
knowledgeable professional.
FAQ about the CAFS Exam
What do I need to study in order to pass the Certified
Air Filter Specialist exam? The 100 question (50
multiple choice, 50 true/false) CAFS Exam is based on the
NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, 4th Ed. (2007). In fact, every
question comes straight out of the book! If you study the
manual thoroughly you should have no problem passing the
exam. We also recommend that you have at least one year of
field experience in the air filter industry. NAFA does offer
a "tutorial" (see below), however, if you have not read and
understood the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, you will
probably not pass the exam.
What is the Cost to take the exam? For members, the
cost to take the exam is $200.00; to renew certification
each year, the cost is $35.00. For nonmembers of NAFA, the
cost to take the exam is $500.00; to renew certification
each year, the cost is $300.00.
What are the renewal requirements? To maintain CAFS
Certification, you must complete eight (8) continuing
education credits annually from the categories listed below.
No more than four (4) total credits will be accepted from
any one category. These activities must have been completed
between October 1 and September 30. Nonmembers of NAFA must
have attended an event sponsored by NAFA or ASHRAE, EPA,
BOMA, AMIAQC, AFE, NAPE, AFS, AABC, RSES, ACCA, CETA, NSPE,
IAQA, AIA, NEBB, ASHE or SMACNA and submit a certificate of
attendance from such event.
4 Credits:
* Attended NAFA Technical Seminar and / or
NAFA Annual Convention
*
Attended seminar on HVAC, IAQ, or filtration given by a
related association or organization (such as ASHRAE, EPA,
BOMA, AMIAQC, AFE, NAPE, AFS, AABC, RSES, ACCA, CETA, NSPE,
IAQA, AIA, NEBB, ASHE or SMACNA
2 Credits:
* Served on a NAFA Committee and attended
at least two committee meetings within the year
*

*
Attended training seminar related to HVAC, IAQ, or
filtration given by a supplier/manufacturer of HVAC, IAQ, or
filtration related products
*

Annual Convention, other event related to HVAC or air
filtration industry or otherwise presented technical
filtration information for educational purposes
*
Presented an in-house seminar or attended an in-house
seminar presented by a CAFS.
When / Where can I take the exam next? The next
CAFS Exam will be administered in: Louisville, KY,
during NAFA's 2010 Technical Seminar, April 21 - 23, 2010.
What about the tutorial? At this time the NAFA
CAFS "Tutorial" - also known as Track One, or The Principles
of Air Filtration - is only presented at NAFA's Technical
Seminars each spring.
Are there any other options? If you choose, you
can travel to the NAFA offices in Virginia Beach, VA to take
the exam. If you wish to also receive a brief tutorial
(approximately three hours), you must first contact NAFA
Staff and prearrange a meeting time. There is a additional
$25.00 per person proctor fee. If you have a large group
taking the exam, you may also be able to have someone from
the NAFA offices travel to your location to administer the

NCT Testing is now available online
NAFA Certified
Technician Level I (NCT) Program
NAFA NCT Certification Exam
Application
NAFA NCT
Policies & Procedures |
|
|
NCT Testing is now available online |
The NAFA
Certified Technician (NCT) Program was first
introduced to NAFA members in January 1999 as an
effort to add more credibility and professionalism
to the air filtration industry. Since its
introduction, nearly 300 air filter service
technicians have taken the 100 question, open-book
exam based on the NAFA Installation, Operation, and
Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems manual.
Almost immediately after the program became
available, interest started growing to make this
program available to a much wider audience than just
the NAFA membership. NAFA members, in particular
those who are Certified Air Filter Specialists
(CAFS), saw the NCT program as an opportunity to
spread knowledge and professionalism to technicians
they encountered in the workplace who might not
otherwise be involved in NAFA. The chance to reach
facility managers and building owners by certifying
their employees also means promoting NAFA as an
organization on a much broader scale than in the
past.
As stated in the Certification Policies and
Procedures, a CAFS must administer the NCT
examination to exam candidates. Now that the program
is available to non-members who will not have CAFS
on staff, current NAFA CAFS will have the
opportunity to more thoroughly train current
customers, and perhaps even to reach new customers
and further their own business, by serving as the
link between NAFA certification and the service
technician.
Candidates who score at least a 70% on the exam are
presented with a certificate from NAFA Headquarters
as well as two NCT patches, as shown on the cover of
this issue of Air Media. Certification requires only
one continuing education credit each year for annual
renewal, as well as completion of the renewal
application and payment of the renewal fee.
Contact NAFA Headquarters at (757) 313-7400 or by
email at nafa@nafahq.org if you are interested in
becoming certified, or if you are a CAFS who is
interested in administering the exam to service
technicians you encounter in the workplace. NAFA
continues to strive to educate and add
professionalism to the industry, and we hope you
will join with us in this mission.
